During this holiday season, we turn our thoughts to those we most care about in our lives. How cool is that? Remember from The Passion Test, “What you put your attention on grows stronger in your life.” Through the rituals of the holidays a significant portion of the world’s population is putting their attention on people they appreciate. And that’s good for all of us. But giving gifts sometimes brings up old resentments, and because this season is also the biggest revenue producer of the year for many companies, there’s the familiar complaint that the holidays have lost their meaning and are dominated by “commericalism.” Yet, this season often brings out the best in people, including the corporations that serve us in various ways. West Jet’s surprise gifts for passengers on a couple of their flights is a great example:
It’s natural to think that when you go out and buy presents for the people you care about, you’re doing it for them. And of course you want to make them happy, plus let them know that they’re important to you. But who are you really giving to? In the Upanishads there is a saying, “All love is directed to the Self.” In addition to all the good things you hope your gifts will do for those you love, your giving is ultimately to make you happy. When you do things that make you happy, that’s a signal that you’re aligned with your life purpose. As we say in The Passion Test, “What you love and God’s will for you are one and the same.” There’s a reason you love giving to those you care about. There’s a reason you love making others happy. And it’s not just because it makes you happy. When you do the things that bring you joy, you’re connected to your life’s purpose.

While you have a unique and special life purpose, there is one common purpose we all share: to serve each other. That’s why we’re here. Each of us has a unique set of talents, skills and our passions are ours and ours alone. Yet this combination of talents, skills and passions comprise your unique and special genius. They are building blocks that allow you to serve. They allow you to give to others in the way that only you can. When you give in meaningful ways, it brings you joy. This is the sign that you’re connected to your life purpose.

Janet and I have been fortunate to reach people all over the world, help them discover their passions and get aligned with their unique and special path to fulfillment. We now have more than 1,200 Passion Test facilitators in 50 countries. I can’t begin to tell you how fulfilling it is to be able to serve in this way. Now it’s your turn. Who are you here to serve?
